Keeping NAMI Support Going Through These Tough Times

At the current time, various face-to-face mental health support and events are being cancelled all around us. It looks like our local Wellness Centers are closed through at least the end of March, and next month’s dual recovery retreat is cancelled. We have cancelled our face-to-face support groups through the end of March, cancelled our March 30 "Fifth Monday" socialization event (payment refunds will be issued in the coming weeks), and interrupted our Family-to-Family Education class. Our April 2 board meeting will likely take place via Zoom meetings.

Starting next Wednesday, March 25, NAMI NJ will be offering both NAMI Connection and NAMI Family Support groups online via Zoom meetings. An announcement will come to your inbox from NAMI NJ in the next day or so (please email us at namigreatermonmouth@gmail.com if you need a copy).

All of the crisis diversion resources listed in our miniguide, including all of the telephone support, are, to our knowledge, continuing to operate (please let us know if you learn anything otherwise, or know of other good resources to share).

We are also aware of the challenges being faced in services and treatment. Some therapists and psychiatrists are seeing people electronically; others are barred due to various business/benefit rules. Day treatment in the NJ developmental community has been mostly suspended, but not necessarily in mental health. Social Security has cancelled walk-in appointments and services, but is keeping its phone lines open. Both High Focus Centers and Relevance Behavioral l Health have informed us that they will provide outpatient services via telehealth, and others are likely following suit.

We had a productive discussion at our last NAMI Connection group on “making the best of a period of limited social/community engagement.” Folks talked about skills learning, one-on-one connecting, sustaining critical healthy habits (diet, exercise, sleep management), and taking on long delayed projects (that closet which needs cleaning, that story you want to write, etc.)

Please feel free to reach out to us if we can be of assistance. We wish everyone health and safety.
